Precarity

2015

Filmed at Carnsore Point, the proposed site for Ireland’s first nuclear power plant (later abandoned due to public opposition and now home to a wind farm), Precarity explores how invisible systems of energy reshape and impose themselves upon landscape. The video never shows the turbines directly, instead, the viewer sees only their manipulated shadows sweeping rhythmically across the terrain. The effect becomes increasingly intense, eventually blacking out the landscape before gradually returning to calm.

Influenced by Structuralist filmmakers of the 1960s and 70s, this work experiments with digital editing as material disruption. The piece was created by digitally layering footage until the editing software nearly failed, an echo of the limits of technology itself.
